Hvar marks World Tourism Day on 27 September with a programme celebrating the town’s tourism history, cultural heritage and music – including free admission to the Hvar Theatre, two guided tours and an evening performance on the main square.
Free admission to the Hvar Theatre
To mark World Tourism Day, visitors can enjoy free admission to the Hvar Theatre, one of Hvar’s most important cultural landmarks.
Founded in 1612 and located on the upper floor of the historic Arsenal, the Hvar Theatre is regarded as the first public theatre in Europe. World Tourism Day offers a special opportunity to discover this remarkable part of Hvar’s heritage and the story of a town where culture, travel and hospitality have been intertwined for centuries.
Guided tour: “The Town That Invented Tourism”
How did Hvar evolve from a place renowned for its mild climate and therapeutic air into one of the best-known tourist destinations on the Adriatic?
The special themed tour “The Town That Invented Tourism” explores the beginnings of organised tourism in Hvar and a story that dates back to 1868 and the founding of the Hvar Hygienic Society.
The tour will take place at two times:
10:00 – tour in English
17:00 – tour in Croatian
Meeting point: Hvar Tourist Board / Tourist Information Office
Participation is free of charge.
Hvarmony Duo on the Pjaca
World Tourism Day ends with music in the heart of Hvar.
At 18:00, Hvarmony Duo will perform on St Stephen’s Square (Pjaca), bringing the day dedicated to Hvar’s tourism and cultural heritage to a musical close.
