From 20 July to 30 September 2026, the Loggia in Hvar will host My Skin – The Culture of Tattooing, an exhibition created in collaboration between Hvar 1612 Public Cultural Institution and the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb.
Presented as part of the 65th Hvar Summer Festival, the exhibition offers a compelling exploration of tattooing as a cultural phenomenon whose meanings, functions and social perceptions have continuously evolved throughout history.
Across different cultures and historical periods, tattoos have served as symbols of ritual, identity, belonging, resistance and personal expression. Today, they have become a universal artistic and communicative medium, reflecting individual stories while remaining deeply connected to broader cultural traditions.
Through a thoughtfully curated museum exhibition, visitors will discover the historical development of tattooing alongside its diverse cultural, social and artistic contexts. The exhibition examines how tattooing exists at the intersection of tradition and contemporary culture, authenticity and inspiration, protest and social norms, spirituality, fashion and aesthetics, revealing the human body as a space of identity, memory and self-expression.
This exhibition represents another successful collaboration between Hvar 1612 and the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb, bringing a significant museum project to Hvar and offering visitors the opportunity to engage with a fascinating contemporary topic through an innovative museum approach.
