Experience the spectacular light projection “Voice of the Sea – Posidonia oceanica” on 9 July at the Arsenal in Hvar. Discover the story of the Mediterranean’s underwater meadows through art, light and sound.
Experience a unique blend of art, nature and technology
Following last summer’s successful presentation, the spectacular light projection “Voice of the Sea – Posidonia oceanica” returns to the façade of the historic Arsenal in Hvar.
On Thursday, 9 July, from 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM, visitors are invited to enjoy an immersive multimedia experience combining light, sound and storytelling to reveal the beauty and importance of Posidonia oceanica, one of the Mediterranean’s most valuable yet endangered marine plants.
Created by Tomislav Brđanović, the projection is presented by Sunce – Association for Nature, Environment and Sustainable Development as part of the BIOPRESSADRIA project, in cooperation with the Hvar Town Tourist Board, the Town of Hvar and HVAR 1612 Public Cultural Institution.
Admission is free.
Why is Posidonia so important?
Although often mistaken for seaweed, Posidonia oceanica is a flowering marine plant found exclusively in the Mediterranean Sea. Its underwater meadows are among the region’s most valuable ecosystems, providing habitat for more than 20% of all known Mediterranean marine species.
Often referred to as the “lungs of the Mediterranean,” Posidonia produces large amounts of oxygen, stores carbon dioxide, stabilises the seabed, reduces coastal erosion and helps maintain the exceptional water clarity for which Hvar is renowned.
Giving a voice to the sea
Through this artistic projection, Posidonia symbolically finds its own voice, telling the story of the challenges it faces every day.
One of the greatest threats to these underwater meadows is careless anchoring. While damage from an anchor can occur within seconds, Posidonia grows only about one centimetre per year, meaning that a single anchoring event can destroy a meadow that has taken decades to develop.
More than a light projection
Alongside the projection, visitors will have the opportunity to meet the team from Sunce, learn more about the BIOPRESSADRIA project and discover how everyone can contribute to protecting the Adriatic Sea.
The event will also feature a Posidonia-inspired photo point, where visitors can take photos and share them on social media for a chance to win prizes. Those interested will also be able to support marine conservation through voluntary donations.
Families are especially welcome, as the programme includes interactive STEM workshops for children and young people, offering hands-on activities focused on marine conservation, biodiversity and environmental awareness.
