One of the world’s most celebrated comedies, “Krletka / La Cage aux folles” by Jean Poiret, comes to the Veneranda Summer Stage in a contemporary Croatian production directed by Krešimir Dolenčić.

Since its Paris premiere in 1973, La Cage aux folles has become a classic of world theatre and cinema. The play inspired successful film and musical adaptations, including the famous American film “The Birdcage” starring Robin Williams, Nathan Lane and Gene Hackman.

This contemporary Croatian adaptation preserves all the elements of a great boulevard comedy, an engaging storyline, comic misunderstandings and colourful characters, while also addressing important contemporary themes of identity, diversity and acceptance.

Through humour, music and dynamic performances, the production explores the limits of social norms and prejudice, creating a theatrical experience that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Director Krešimir Dolenčić describes the production as a “living performance” that establishes direct communication with the audience and uses comedy as one of the strongest forms of contemporary social dialogue.

Audiences can expect an energetic evening of theatre filled with humour, music, emotion and outstanding acting performances.
