Island, Islet, Reef Exhibition by Maja Jelušić at Fabrika Gallery
A poetic tribute to the Hvar archipelago through 37 blue canvases
On Friday, 10 July at 9:00 PM, Fabrika Gallery in Hvar will open the exhibition Island, Islet, Reef by Croatian artist Maja Jelušić. The exhibition will remain open until 20 July and can be visited daily from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
Titled 37 Blue Canvases, the exhibition is a tribute to the island of Hvar and its archipelago. Inspired by the thirty-seven islands, islets and reefs that surround Hvar, the artist explores themes of identity, belonging and the relationship between people and the landscapes that shape them.
Each of the 37 canvases represents one island, islet or reef. Painted in different shades of blue and inscribed with thoughts, short texts or poems in white, together they form a poetic visual journal inspired by the sea and the island landscape.
At the heart of the exhibition is an inversion of conventional spatial perception. The sea, expressed through countless variations of blue, becomes solid ground, while the white gallery walls take on the role of the sea. Through this reversal, the work invites visitors to reflect on the space between land and sea, memory and presence, word and image.
The project continues Maja Jelušić’s long-standing exploration of the relationship between painting and poetry. Originally conceived during an artist residency in the Lika region, the work demonstrates how landscape transcends geography, becoming an inner experience shaped by memory, imagination and personal connection.
