“Gnjezdišta” Exhibition by Tončica Jelača Marijančević |An immersive installation dedicated to life, creation and connection

When: Thursday, August 13, 2026 at 9:00 PM
Where: Church of St. John, Hvar

The exhibition “Gnjezdišta” by artist Tončica Jelača Marijančević presents an immersive installation exploring fundamental themes of life, creation and interconnectedness.

Rooted in a deep fascination with life, not only as a biological phenomenon, but as a continuous act of creation and preservation,  the artist creates a space dedicated to the symbolism of the nest: a place that shelters, protects and prepares life for a new beginning.

The installation is conceived as a complete sensory experience that combines visual and sound elements into an intimate atmosphere. The sound composition, featuring the artist’s voice alongside original music by Jakša Matošić, flows through the space like a lullaby about birth, survival and the eternal cycle of life.

The sculptures, created from rice paper, wire, wood, cotton and terracotta, do not imitate nature but instead become places where life emerges and develops. They symbolize seeds of plants, animals, humans and even ideas.

In the artistic world of Tončica Jelača Marijančević, creation arises from an intuitive and spiritual process inspired by philosophical reflections on the connection between humanity, nature and universal creative energy.

The forms within “Gnjezdišta” are organic, spontaneous and interconnected, emphasizing the idea of community and the relationship between all living beings.

The white colour holds particular symbolic importance in her work, representing purity, light and the potential of creation. In this sense, her artistic practice follows the spiritual and aesthetic ideas of Wassily Kandinsky, who considered white not as emptiness, but as the source of all possibilities.

The exhibition at the Church of St. John offers visitors an intimate space for contemplation and reflection on life, creation and belonging within the world around us.
