Mark Boellaard presents The Roots of the Blues at Fortica Fortress in Hvar on 18 August 2026 at 19:30, with songs and stories from the golden age of acoustic blues.

This August, Fortica Fortress once again becomes a stage for music at sunset.

As part of the Fortica Sunset Session programme, Dutch blues musician Mark Boellaard, who has lived on Hvar for the past 15 years, presents The Roots of the Blues.

Through songs and short stories from the lives of legends such as Robert Johnson, Son House, Blind Willie Johnson and Skip James, the audience will be taken on a journey to the very beginnings of blues music.

The programme explores the golden age of acoustic blues in the 1920s and 1930s, a period whose raw and authentic sound had an enormous influence on the later development of blues, rock’n’roll and rock music.

Set within the historic surroundings of Fortica Fortress, the concert offers a distinctive musical experience accompanied by evening views over Hvar and the Pakleni Islands.
