Hvar Climbing

Numerous sports events that Hvar hosts send an unambiguous message about sports spirit of Hvar’s tourism.

Hvar Town and Tourist Board of Hvar have been shown great honour when chosen to be the host of two qualification races for ÖTILLÖ World Championship in swimrun. Swimrun is exceptionally difficult sports discipline in aquathlon category – pairs alternate between running and swimming on 45 to 75 km long roads. ÖTILLÖ competition (in Swedish – from island to island) has emerged as a result of a bet between two young Swedish men in 2006. Their extreme attempt from Stockholm’s archipelago evolved, 10 years later, into a new sports discipline. Its difficulty is on ironman level and today it gathers tens of thousands of fans all over the world and presents excellent promotion for every destination. ”ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Weekend Hvar“ is going to emphasize the most beautiful and valuable natural and cultural heritage: it is going through town’s historical core, protected landscape of Pakleni islands and peninsula Pelegrin, by the ruins of classical-antiquity monuments, through old villages, over olive groves, vineyards and lavender fields.

When season starts it is almost impossible to imagine that Hvar could be a place to organize anything, but 6 editions of Hvar Half Marathon in hot August prove the opposite. Runners have shown increasing interest for participating in unique semi-marathon with one of the most beautiful and the most demanding roads (22 km long and 400 m of height difference) from Stari Grad to Hvar.

The end of a season doesn’t mean the end of events. Reasons for visiting Hvar in postseason have for several years been Big Game Fishing tournament in October, organized by fishing-sports club Palmižana, and squid-hunting competition Peškafondo Gariful Hvar in November. When you add to all this 40th International New Year’s Regatta for laser and optimist (with 36th Zdenko Roić Memorial) that traditionally end on New Year’s Eve, we can rightfully say that Hvar is only a few steps away from making active vacation a year-round fact.

Let us remind you that activities in the open were a part of tourist offer even in first Hvar’s tourist guides, published over hundred years ago. At that time active vacation included sailing, swimming, hiking across surrounding hills and night fishing. It is a fact that today’s adventurists are choosier and know very well what they want, but Hvar also knows how to hand it out to them.
