Museums & Galleries

The city of Hvar is a unique fusion of luxurious Mediterranean nature, rich cultural and historical heritage, and mundane, tourist present. The heritage, the numerous traces of the lasting presence of man in urban and rural architecture, the dry-stone walls in the fields, the mounds and the unspoiled nature are harmonised, connected, even inseparable. The island is known to be a place to relax and restore lost energy.

Arsenal

Hvar's Theatre & Arsenal

The Gallery of Modern Art in Hvar was established in 1957, thanks to the relentless efforts of Dr. Grgo Gamulin and Dr. Niko Duboković. It is located in the Arsenal building, in the lobby of The Historic Theatre of Hvar, and it was given the name Arsenal after the renovation in 1984. Dr. Grgo Gamulin, one of the leading experts in the field of Croatian contemporary art at the time, devised the first permanent display and the newly-made collection reflected the tendencies in Croatian fine arts of the transitional period in the 1950s, the period when the avant-garde art was born and when the synthesis of figurative qualities provided the starting point for the artists’ journey to abstraction.
Grgo Gamulin’s permanent display has remained the central and the most valuable part of the collection holdings.
In 1984, the Gallery was renovated and became a part of The Centre for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage of Hvar. Dr. Kruno Prijatelj made a few suggestions regarding the permanent display: the selected works aimed to illustrate the longest possible period in the development of painting in the former state and painters from Hvar and Dubrovnik were grouped together.
Today, the Arsenal Gallery is a collection within the Hvar Heritage Museum. The permanent display, containing the most valuable paintings, sculptures and prints from the Museum holdings, and various organised temporary exhibitions.

Treasury of the cathedral of Hvar

The museum is located in the Bishop’s Palace. There are exhibited artworks of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque stylistic features. There is also a rich collection of ecclesiastical vestments and liturgical dishes. Among the exhibits stand out the chasuble and chalice of Bishop Tomasini from the 15th century and bishop’s staff (pastoral) of gilded brass of bishop Pritić, work of Pavle Dubravčić from Dubrovnik from the 16th century. Especially valuable are bust of St. Stjepan, protector of the Hvar municipality, from the 17th century; chasuble and pluvial from the 15th century, with an exceptional figural embroidery, and the classical silver bust of the co-protector (co-guardian) of Hvar, St. Prosperus from the 18th century. As a curiosity we highlight the cloak of the last Venetian doge (end of the 18th century), which was redone into pluvial. In the treasury are also exhibited icons from the Hvar churches of Our Lady of Anuncijata and Our Lady of Kruvenica from the 14th and 15th century and images from other churches of the island of Hvar.

Hanibal Lucić’s Summer Residence

Hvar, Hanibal's Summer house

Hanibal Lucić’s Summer Residence (around 1530) is a lovely example of the Renaissance architecture of country houses. It consists of two buildings and a large fenced garden in the Renaissance style, but with clearly visible Late Gothic features. The complex is located in the fields, outside the town walls.
The summer residence is typical of the Dalmatian Renaissance architecture, which is not surprising since local masters took part in its building. They worked with builders and stonemasons from Korčula and Brač and it is likely that the builders and the masters supplied the stonework from their native islands. The summer residence can be accessed via the main town square.
